Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start projection mapping?

Figure out your finances. How much are you able to invest? Will you need a multi-year growth plan? From scratch plan on about $1,000 to get started. Watch some examples of displays. Is it something that you feel your neighborhood it up for? Are you ready to devote the time to plan, produce, and sit with it when it is out? Are you ok with some traffic? Then... think about your house. Does it have enough clear faces to display clear images on? Is there a lot of obstructions that will cast shadows on your house? Is there ambient light that will make it harder to see if you have a lower lumen projector? Would you trust leaving a couple hundred dollars chained down in your front yard? Next... watch the tutorials. Are they obtainable? Are you ready for troubleshooting? Will you computer handle the specs of the software you choose? If you answered yes... Go For It! It is crazy rewarding and an amazing journey of growth and happiness ahead of you. Take our comprehensive course to learn quick and reduce the learning curve!

What projector should I buy?

This is a loaded question that has many viewpoints. What it comes down to is a few basic things. Purchase a SHORT THROW projector. Figure out your budget and buy the one that has the most lumens (not LED). The minimum recommended lumen is 3,500. Any less and it will be difficult to see.

How many projectors will I need?

Many houses will only need one projector to cover the house. You are also able to combine projectors to span a larger area. It does take a higher level of work and added software and hardware if you plan to combine projectors.

Can I just buy the show from someone and put it on my house?

Yes, and no. First the no, the show has to be customized to your property and you have to do a lot of behind the scenes work to make it work. Yes, after creating your housing, placing the projector, and mapping your property you are able to pay people to customize a show to fit your house. Any errors in the mapping file or lost placement is generally not supported by the person that you paid to create the show. I recommend only purchasing if you are in a pinch or just getting started. I would not recommend setting this up with the vision of only purchasing shows. It might end up more of a headache than it is worth. This is not a set it and forget it hobby.

Can I charge or take donations?

Donations are a slippery slope of legalities. Once accepting donations you not only have to be careful claiming the income but you also have to make sure that the media you use has the correct licensing. Many people will accept donations that go towards a non-profit that they want to support.

How do I project my projector from being stolen?

The equipment used is very expensive. There is a huge risk with leaving it outside for theft, damage, and weather damage. I always say theft deterrent. There is always the possibility of having it stolen. The more popular your show, the less likely you will have issues. Try to think about how you would steal it and then build up your enclosure to try to thwart it. Best suggestion is to be present and to take it in when you are not actively monitoring or if there are periods of low to no crowds.

How much does projection mapping cost?

This varies by house and the resources that you currently have. The average start-up cost would be between $800 - $2000. You can save money by DIY building and purchasing used equipment. Others will want to invest more upfront so they don't have to replace or risk issues with used equipment. Our course walks you through all the beginning planning and costs. Check out our course!

Can you do projection mapping at home?

Yes! It is not just for castles and commercial businesses. Our website, group and course is specifically targeting the average decorator. We refer to it as RESIDENTIAL Projection Mapping. Let's make our own category!

What equipment do I need for projection mapping?

The basic equipment that you will need is a projector, computer, enclosure, audio/fm transmitter, and media player.

What is the easiest way to get into projection mapping?

Ease comes at a price. The easiest way is to check out www.Luxedo.com. They have a full package where you just provide the power and the house. Once you set it up and get your snapshot, you can send the snapshot to a show creator and they will create a show that you can play on your house.

What software do I need for projection mapping?

If you are just planning on purchasing shows, you will only need simple software to draw lines. I personally use keynote/powerpoint. There are also downloadable options from the show creators sites.

If you are creating shows, the top two software solutions are Adobe After Effects and Davinci Resolve. Both have pros and cons. Check out our page dedicated to software.

Can residential projection mapping be used year-round?

It sure can! There are many holidays year round. If you are planning to leave it up year round, make sure you design your enclosure to meet the needs year round (security, weather, temperature, etc).

How does residential projection mapping compare to traditional holiday lighting displays?

Residential projection mapping offers a unique and modern alternative to traditional holiday lighting displays, providing a more dynamic and visually impressive experience that can be customized and updated easily. However, it can be more expensive and complex to install and maintain compared to traditional holiday lighting displays.

What kind of maintenance is required for projection mapping?

Regular maintenance is required for a residential projection mapping system to ensure that the projectors are working properly and the content is being displayed correctly. This can include cleaning the projectors and lenses, replacing bulbs, and troubleshooting any issues that arise.

How long does it take to get the projection mapping set up?

This is something that could be done in a weekend if you are handy or paying for pre-made solutions. Our course is a great way to learn, purchase, setup, and create a show quickly. Check it out!

What kind of content can be projected?

Almost any type of content can be projected with residential projection mapping, including custom designs, animations, and video content.

What types of surfaces can be used for projection mapping on residential buildings?

Projection mapping can be done on a wide range of surfaces, including brick, stucco, siding, and even trees or foliage.

Is it possible to project different content on different sides of a building at the same time?

Yes, it is possible to use multiple projectors to project different content on different sides of a building simultaneously.

How far away from the building do the projectors need to be?

The distance between the projectors and the building will depend on the size of the projection area, the type of projectors used, and other factors. In general, projectors should be placed far enough away to cover the area you need but close enough that you do not lose a lot of light.
